You’ve seen the unpainted sculpt, now feat your eyes on the first fully painted edition of Brent Nolasco x J*Ryu’s ‘My Drifting Heart’. Brent’s stunning hand-painting work pulls out all the detail of J*Ryu’s sculpt and Dodgrr’s cast pieces. From Brent’s spot-on signature colors to the realistic rendering of the metal and wood surfaces, this is a painting come to life in thrilling 3D fashion.
While this first colorway is limited to 10 pieces, it’s unclear at the moment how many will be available at the Dragatomi booth (#4935). Brent is in crunch mode, painting away as the mother of all shows approaches. Pre-orders will be taken at the booth for the remaining, yet to be completed pieces. No word on pricing yet. Brent Nolasco x J*Ryu - ‘My Drifting Heart’ @ SDCC 2011

A few days ago we brought you a teaser of Brent Nolasco and J*Ryu’s collaborative resin project, ‘My Drifting Heart’. Now here’s a full look at the unpainted figure which shows off the full artistry of the piece which is based on one of Brent’s OG paintings and includes J*Ryu’s familiar ghostly female (attached via magnet) clutching the side of the large bird emerging from a tree. The surreal mix of the bird and the tree is impressively done. From the design to J*Ryu’s sculpting and Dodgrr’s casting this looks like a high quality release.
Brent is now working overtime to hand-paint these towering (14+”) figures in order to have a limited number available at SDCC via the Dragatomi booth. We’re looking forward to bringing you shots of the finished pieces. No word on pricing yet. After the jump you’ll find plenty of additional views of the piece, Brent’s OG painting, a design sketch and a look at J*Ryu’s original sculpt.

Brent Nolasco and J*Ryu continue their collaborative mojo in a big way with their upcoming ‘My Drifting Heart’ resin project due to debut at SDCC. Shown here in teaser form is the first unpainted cast done by Dodgrr. Standing 14” tall, this insanely ambitious project is based on one of Brent’s paintings, features J*Ryu’s recurring ghost girl figure seen in many of his recent custom projects, and is sculpted by J*Ryu. How ambitious? How about nineteen separately cast and assembled pieces which will then be hand-painted by Brent.
For me, this project showcases the qualities that set ‘art toys’ apart from other offerings. Namely the risk taking, dedication and untold effort from artists and production crews in order to create pieces that shouldn’t possibly exist, yet become reality, driven by artistic passion and the need for self-expression.
Look for limited quantities of ‘My Drifting Heart’ for SDCC in Dragatomi’s booth and the opportunity to pre-order if you miss out on picking one up at the show.

Gallery 1988 is once again putting together their annual Crazy 4 Cult show, which for it's 5th show has amassed over 100 participating artists to re-create their favorite cult classics in different art forms. You can find the complete list of participating artists HERE. ‘I’m Getting Too Old For This Shit’ will be taking place this Friday, July 8th at 7PM at the 1988’s Melrose location. On Sunday, July 10th at Noon, G1988 will also be holding their Crazy 4 Cult coffee table book release and signing party, where many of the artists from the show will be found under one roof to sign and sketch in everyone's books and hang out all day! And the photos keep rollin in... as we posted up earlier the awesome works from Leecifer for the Toy Art Gallery 6-man group show titled "Contemporary Figurative Modifications" we are now getting a look at a few of the customs that New York artist Brent Nolasco has contributed to this show... and wow are they looking good! It's been quite some time since we have seen Brent do any customs as he took some time off from them, but the above picture shows a new fresh direction, and I am loving it. He mashed up some ThreeA figures along with Soto's "The Seeker", and it appears to be Plaseebo's "Skulloctopus", to make some ghastly monstermechbots (yup I made up a new word)! Remember that these figures are just the tip of the iceberg and the show is also featuring works from Bob Conge of Plaseebo, Jim Koch, TaskOne, Leecifer and NERVISWR3K... don't miss this show!

Paul Budnitz – I Am Plastic, Too

In "I am plastic too" I have a couple of pages of customs in this book. I m super excited to be apart of it.
While I Am Plastic, Kidrobot’s first collected book about designer vinyl took some heat from some collectors it was noteworthy in part because of the broad scope of toys selected – not just western but also a nice mix of eastern figures. So we’ve been curious about the anticipated follow-up titled – I Am Plastic, Too. Kidrobot front man Paul Budnitz recently revealed this image from the book (cover? or just promo?) featuring a Thomas Han 8” Painkiller Dunny.
The book is subtitled – “the next generation of designer toys” which we assume means it features toys since the publication of the first book (late ‘06). This one is chock full of photos/illustrations – 1000 or so. As for a shipping date for this one? Budnitz leaves it as ‘fall’ while the publisher Abrams indicates October 1st, 2010. The 368 page hardcover volume is available for pre-order now and has a suggested retail of $45 (Amazon is cheaper, of course).

Brent Nolasco's new "Over Saturated & Under Appreciated" project will debut at the Tenacious Toys booth (#2878) at the 2010 New York Comic-Con, October 8-10.

NEW YORK, NY (October 7, 2010)

Brent Nolasco's newest line of artworks is called "Over Saturated & Under Appreciated". The project uses mass-produced found objects as a basis for Brent's off-kilter artwork. Brent has wanted to do this project for a long time, and recently acquired some skulls mass-produced by Martha Stewart, giving him the perfect starting point. This new direction gives Brent the opportunity to put his spin on pop culture icons and symbols.

The beginnings of this project- the skulls- will be for sale at the Tenacious Toys NYCC booth #2878 in The Cultyard. A follow-up piece incorporating a gun and a skull will also be on display.

The Brent Nolasco / Blamo Project will be introduced at the Tenacious Toys booth (#2878) at the 2010 New York Comic-Con, October 8-10.

NEW YORK, NY (September 27, 2010)

The Nolasco / Blamo resin project is a way for Brent to express himself and to have a non-conventional release. Since the process of making figures and products from Blamo are more of a fine art than mass production, he wanted a more "hands on" approach to making his next figure. Brent really wanted to go back to how resin figures were first done by artists.

Brent first sculpted this figure by hand. It's something he had never done before. The figure consists of 6 pieces that are hand casted separately and then put together. Each piece is hand painted by Brent so there is slight variation in each paint job.

Each piece is very unique and has it's own characteristics that set them apart from one another. Brent likes that they are more organic and free-formed than pieces from a factory which pumps out products for the masses. It makes each release more personal.

The runs on these upcoming figures are going to be limited quantities. Some will be just "one-offs". Brent is looking to do some sculpting and other interesting things with these figures to keep the ideas fresh.

Moving away from vinyl customs, Brent Nolasco eases into resin customs and fusion pieces with ‘Genesis’ featuring Scribe’s Rhino resin and his own Gordo (the little sidekick). Bridging his 2D and 3D art, Brent has carried his canvas painting style over to this new piece. This piece continues his recent ‘natural’ vibe with the use of synthetic flowers. The piece also features paper prints, metal spikes and found objects.

Whoa… I’m glad the sun is out, as I wouldn’t want to run into Brent Nolasco’s creature amalgamation, ‘Cluster Fuck’ without the reassurance of day light. This piece was created for the Civil War themed Qee show @ Spaghetti Project which opens on Saturday, July 10th (5 PM) in Virginia. The use of the military slang reference (things gone horribly wrong) applies both to the mutations that have produced this creature and in our opinion more generally to the Civil War as a horrible whole.

The concept behind this custom was to make a fusion of a couple of my favorite vinyl toys. A lot of the pieces where leftovers from other toys pieces that I didn't use for customs. I also ended up using one of my Gordo resin figures from Myplasticheart. The custom changed a couple of times as it was being made. At one point, the custom got too complex and I decided to simplify it so that the other platforms would not be so obscure, and just compliment each other.

"This custom was a lot of work. It seems like it demanded and wanted my full attention like a child. The concept behind this custom was to sculpt a little more then I use to. The paint job is to be abstract and defined all at the same time. So when you are look at it you visually go from things being transparent ,translucent to defended. To construct the piece I used Ave Sculpt to sculpt the head and other parts of the body. With all my custom I like to use a variety of objects and materials to make the custom."

Brent Nolasco just sent over some sweet pictures of his latest custom for the "5 Eyed Dragon Show" at Dragatomi on April 10th. This piece, although it may look unfinished, that is the intention, and Brent's focus this year with his customs is going to be on the form! Brent says "Adding paint might take away from the piece, and this year I'm going to keep some customs with out paint. So you can focus more on the fusions of all the platforms and the concept behind the customs." I think that is a great idea and I have felt that way about alot of pieces in the past not just from Brent but other artists (including my own work) that show off their pieces all primed, without paint, they look amazing and then after adding paint something is lost.

The title of this pieces is "Concept Study No.01", and is a mesh of many vinyl pieces including, but not limited to Craola, Eaton, Mindstyle, and also included in the mix is found objects, Aves Sculpt, plastic, and prime... and what a mash up of pure awesomeness!

> My name is Brent Nolasco. I was born in Long Beach, California. I now

   live in Allentown, Pennsylvania where I work as an artist, full time.

> XFUNS：Please you tell us a little about your studies? How did you get

involved in character design world?

  I started developing characters at a young age. Watching cartoons and

  reading comic books really sparked my imagination. I only went to art

  school for 1 year. I am a mostly self-taught artist. I always had a

creative side.

> XFUNS：What’s the main concept of your work?

> Some of the themes that run though my work are nature vs.

  industrialism, and how creatures have to adapt to survive.

> XFUNS：You have very unique style that full of mischievous, could you

talk about how you develop your own aesthetic value?

> I try to stand apart from the “norm” or what is seen everywhere else.

  The characters are just a reflection of what I visualize in my head.

There is a definite undertone of mischievousness which reflects my

  personality. I like to have fun and laugh and try not to take things

  too serious.

> XFUNS：How long does it take to produce a WHOLE NEW character (figure

  toy) included painting, custom, etc.?

> I always work on a couple of pieces at a time, at least 5-10. I

  usually will prime a few pieces one day, then start the base coats of

  paint, add texture, and then do the detail work which is the most time

  consuming. So it is hard for me to answer exactly how long it takes to

  do one piece because I switch between many when I work.

> XFUNS：When did you start to customize your first vinyl toy from a

  simple painting to a real physical toy?

> I started doing customs about 5 years ago. Fine Art was my main focus,

but I began to build characters out of wire forms and covered them

with liquid plastic and hand sewn clothing. Shortly after that, I

  discovered the vinyl toy world in a Complex Magazine.

> XFUNS：You’ve been drawing and painting numerous characters on your

  creating map, how did you make character done as a vinyl toy (How you

  selected one of characters as becoming a figure toy)?

> First I came up with a basic concept in my mind. Then I created some

  sketches, followed by “turn a rounds”. I had to think of something

  that would translate well into resin.

> XFUNS：Did you chose to hand-paint each piece?

> How will you deal with so many toys if they have an incredible

  selling at a market? Or each of your characters has its own limited

  figures?

> Yes, I hand painted each piece. My studio looked like a production

  line! I knew that the first release would be a limited run, and I

  decided that I wanted to put out a high quality piece. It was always

  one of my goals to hand paint my first piece so that people would have

  a really good representation of my work. Also, I feel that it would

  have been hard for a factory to try to translate my style, and keep

  the costs down for the consumers.

> XFUNS：Could you share how you created a successful character as Blue

  Orchid Edition Gordo with us?

> People always wanted to see my artwork translated into a 3 dimensional

  figure. My Plastic Heart gave me the opportunity to created and

  produce my first original figure. It was a joint collaboration to put

out the best product that we could.

> XFUNS：Could you talk about the way you sell the figure toys, online

store or physical store? Which line is better?

> For the Blue Orchid Gordo, we had a toy release party at the My

  Plastic Heart store in New York. Then 2 days later we released it

online. I like having releases at stores/galleries because I get to

  meet the fans and talk and spend time with them to thank them, but

  having my piece available online enables people from around the world

  to have access to it. So I think that both physical stores and online

  stores are good.

> XFUNS：You have a successful selling at a market, how could you make

  creating and marketing both done well at the same time?

> You can make both creating and marketing successful but you need to

  know how to balance them. I always try to put out a high quality

  piece, which is something that people can always expect from me. I

  like lots of detail and don’t like to compromise the design, like

  always adding a personal touch, and making them like a one-of-a- kind

  piece.

> XFUNS：Did you sell your figure toy in Taiwan for character collector?

> Yes, my figures sell all over the world. Some collectors are private

  and do not want to be known, while others post their collections

  online. There is a lot of work that people have not seen because the

  private collectors keep it to themselves.

> XFUNS：Could you please share a memorable creating experience you had with us?

> Doing the Blue Orchid Gordo was fun because for the first time I was

  painting my own figure, and not customizing someone else’s work. Every

  detail, I created. Even though it took a while to paint all of the

  figures for the first color way, it was still exciting.

> XFUNS：Which of your completed projects are you most satisfied with?

> I really liked the Mindstyle Stitch, Mickey Halo Brand, the figure

  that I did for the Lost television show, My Plastic Heart Gordo, and

  some of the things that I am already working on for next year. I am

  returning to a more “fine art” style next year, which I am excited

  about.

> XFUNS：If you have infinite resources for a day; what would you like to create?

> I would like to be able to create sculptures on the level of Jeff

Koons and Takashi Murakami. It would be fun to translate my pieces

  into works the size that they do like Koons’ pool toys made out of

  metal and Murakami’s 3 dimensional figures.

> XFUNS：What new projects are you working on currently and what’s the

  next big thing?

> I am currently working on a few projects that I cannot discuss right

  now. I am still in the development stages. I am always evolving, and

trying to create a new style. A year from now, my work may be totally

different. Also, there will be new color ways for my Gordo figure.

> XFUNS：What current artist or people you admire? Why?

> Jeff Koons for how he has created such a huge art empire, and the

  scale and quality of his art. Greg “Craola” Simkins for his amazing

  detail, scale, and fine art quality. His characters are amazingly

  creative. John Galliano for his constant evolution and redefinition of

  art in fashion.

> XFUNS：What words of wisdom do you have for anyone interested in

  entering the world of the character design?

> Always stick to your ideas and try not to be influenced too much by

  what others are doing. Have fun and always enjoy what you do. Never

  stop learning and striving for excellence. Don’t be afraid to put

  yourself out there and try new things.

The SEMA Show had Las Vegas packed to the brim with the hottest rides, celebrity’s and scantily clad models. Everything we think the ABC Kids Show needs to become! Then again, even the fanciest, rarest Bugaboo is just a stroller round these parts, only a Roddler or pair of DD’s gets you all access. Admittedly crazy as it is, humble Joe that you know from juvenile product land is a well known celebrity in the automotive world, so this is home away from home. Made for a few nice shots I’d say. After the third year in attendance and on display we are tearing it up like the first day we hit the pavement.

We were incredible happy when one of the most popular toy customizer of our time agreed to be the first laboratory “artist” for our special interview feature “And the rest is nonsense: 66 questions to…“.
He was all into it the moment we approached him with the idea about our little “experiment”. And we can’t thank him enough to test together with us the waters. He was kind enough to answer all our 66 questions and shares therein some little secrets with you, our beloved JAAB readers. We hope you will enjoy it as much as we did! Brent Nolasco: Ok

1. When was the last time you talked to the ocean?

Everytime I’m in California, I always make it a point to go to the Huntington Pier. It’s my favorite place to go to clear my mind. We always end up conversing back and forth. It makes me feel refreshed and rejuvenated.

2. Early bird or grumpy bum?

Early bird – I can’t wait to get up in the morning.

3. The Brent Nolasco-home-alone-activity?

I am usually working when I am home alone because my family is not there. It’s my catch up time. Sorry, no juicy answer!

4. What makes you angry?

The crinkling of plastic shopping bags and the squeeking of balloons.

5. Best quality you like in a person?

Honesty and realness, and I love humor.

6. Last time you had tears in your eyes?
?

7. Always a pleasure to look in the mirror?

Yeah, except I’m starting to get some grey hair in my stubble. Old man winter style.

8. Incredible guilty conscience or normal bad conscience?

I don’t feel guilty about things.

9. Last time you said “I love you”?

Yesterday!

10. Gonna be questioned at heavens or hells gate?

Heaven

11. Any problems to get in?

Hope not!

12. No pleasure without pain?

Without pain, there is no pleasure because nothing is handed to you.

13. There is no accounting for taste?

I like to keep things tasteful because if something is too provocative, it can overthrow the

creativeness and skill.

14. The Nolasco think tank?

It’s all in my head. I always conceptionalize it in my head, and not on paper. I think it out before I start.

15. Profession of your parents?

Mom- housewife, Dad- medical professional

16. House or apartment?

House

17. Planned to become an artist?

I’ve always been creative and that was the outlet.

18. What kind of brush?

No specific brand name, it’s all about what they can do for me. I like a good “liner”. I don’t buy expensive ones.

19. Based on which kind of fear/panic develops the greatest art?

I stopped creating out of fear or panic, and negative emotions. I work best when I am content. And sometimes I’m not content until I work.

20. Most of the people out there probably know you by the incredible custom vinyl toys you did

so far. Skull-faced creatures, armed with deadly teeth and boney extremities floating often in a colorful mushrooms setting. Where do you get your inspiration from?

All inspiration comes from nature. I have a great appreciation for what is all around me. I take in from everyday life and images. I mash everything together. I like to page through magazines and books. Whatever soundtrack I’m listening to sets the tone of my pieces.

21. Any favorite sculpt?

22. Still taking commission jobs?

Yes, always. I like working with people on a personal basis. It’s fun to know who they are.

23. Favorite custom project you have done so far?

The Mindstyle “Stitch project” and “Mickey Halo Brand Project”

24. Anything you desperately wanted to customized but yet had not the chance to?

A 4 foot “KAWS”.

25. Your customs stand out not only by the detailed and realistic sculpting but moreover by the vivid and colorful paint application. Want to share some details on the technique?

That is a really involved question….I’m having an A.D.D. moment.

26. Your recent Edward scissorhand custom MAD*l in the “Crazy 4 Cult” show at gallery1988 (shown above) was quite different to the style you are known for so far. What happened?

I wanted to get back to what I use to do. I use to do realistic paintings when I was younger.

27. Any plans to pursue this direction?

Yes, I plan on adding that to my current style, just as another option, but not replacing.

28. In your recent show “From mind to matter” with NEMO at ToyQube gallery you not only showed splendid customs but a series of paintings, too. Can you shed some light on the background of the characters you portrayed in these?

The characters a metamorphoses of what is in my head. They came straight from my mind, like instinct, and not preplanning.

29. Is there any background story or general theme to it?

Not really, they are like character studies. I just go with the flow.

30. Compared to your last year solo show at MPH the direction of painting or more specific painting technique seems to have changed, too. What made you to approach a different style in

your recent work?

I have a lot of different styles that people have not seen, and I always like to switch it up and not just keep producing the same things over and over. The MPH show was like just one subject matter and tone. I’m always trying to evolve and not stand still.

31. In a recent interview on VPeast you mentioned Jeff Koons as one of the artists you look up to. Any plans to work on installations and sculptures in the future?

That has always been one of my dreams. I love to “go big”.

32. Yes we can?

Always!

33. Ernie or Bert?

Ernie the little mexican! (I’m mexican – I can say that!) Lol

34. Favorite movie from the 90s?

Nightmare Before Christmas

35. Which sport will replace sex?

I’m married and nothing replaces sex!

36. Left or right side of the bed?

Left

37. Strawberry or chocolate donut?

Strawberry jelly filled.

38. Lego or Playmobil?

I gotta say Playmobil! My son got me into it. I love the details. We’ve got an entire zoo, and airport, dinosaur excavation site, and an indian village!

39. Best roller coaster ride ever?

Montezuma’s Revenge at Knotts Berry Farm in California. I was able to ride them when I was young.

40. Lee or Levis?

Levis

41. Favorite decade of the last century?

The 80s because that was when I was first aware of pop culture, and I still had the innocence in me.

42. Current top 3 on your ipod playlist?

Only 3?! Right now it’s The Dead Weather, The Killers, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs

43. Fan of shower karaoke?

Sometimes, but our batteries died in the shower player.

44. You didn’t attend SDCC this year, any good reason for that?

I wanted to have product to represent me. My projects were held back.

45. Already plans for next years SDCC?

Yes, I’ll be there

46. What’s the status of your vinyl figure project with BIC?

I can’t say much about it. It will come out.

47. I noticed a lot of artist start working with resin recently. Any plans to explore this medium, too?

Yes, I’m aiming at releasing a toy this November!

48. Is resin the new vinyl?

I think that it is more like a fine art piece. There is more flexibility and control.

49. What do you prefer for a toy: Run size of 50 or 500?

50. Any comment on the “colorway issue”?

I think that sometimes there are too many colorways.

51. How important is the internet for your work?

VERY IMPORTANT.

52. Do artists need galleries or vice versa?

We need each other.

53. Do you feel that you are welcomed in a gallery setting when your roots (or at the least, where

you gained popularity and renown) are in custom vinyl, rather than traditional canvas?

I started painting first, and then translated it onto vinyl. Now I’m trying to do a full circle and go back.

54. Is loyalty and respect between artists and galleries important? Does it even exist?

Oh yeah, definitely. I believe in never biting the hand that first fed you.

55. Does art pay the bills?

Yes

56. Any attempt to predict the future of the low brow / contemporary art and designer vinyl scene?

We are all always trying to cross over back and forth. Hopefully the scene will have less constraints and be open.

57. What do you think about collaboration between artists? Does it make sense?

Yes it does. You can always grow from collaborations. You can always learn new things. If there isn’t any interaction between artists, you can grow stagnant.

58. How important are group shows for an artist?

They are very important because they expose you to other fan-bases.

59. Next project coming up?

My resin toy with MyPlasticHeart due by the end of the year.

60. Ever caught red-handed?

Never

61. Last words?

Keep it real.

62. Afraid of death?

I’ll be smiling at the white light but not for a long while from now.

Yes

I don’t want to think about it.

While we haven’t seen all the pieces yet, we’re pretty sure Brent Nolasco’s Blessed Blessed Oblivion will be one of the standout pieces. On this piece, which features a Labbit and a Mini Munny, Brent showcases his strong artistry by seamlessly blending painting with sculptural elements as well as the occasional found object. Brent consistently manages to create art pieces rather than what customs sometimes boil down to, technical demonstrations of prowess.
